GIVE THE GIFT OF NEARBY NATURE!
With Father’s Day just around the corner, are you sick of getting Dad just another tie? Or are you stumped for a graduation present for that “greenie” in your family? This year, why not give the gift of nearby nature with a membership in NVCT! Your thoughtful donation will help preserve natural lands in their own neighborhood and reduce future traffic to boot! Memberships start as low as $25. Visit www.nvct.org today to “click and contribute” to what the Catalogue for Philanthropy calls “one of the best small nonprofits in the Greater Washington, DC region.”
Earth Month Activities
We in the environmental field affectionately refer to the 6 weeks of April and early May as “Earth Month,” because so many wonderful activities are taking place all across the region to re-connect kids and adults with nature after a long winter cooped up indoors. This year NVCT was an enthusiastic participant in many events to welcome spring, including:
· 4/10 Alice Ferguson Foundation Potomac River Watershed Clean-up—hats off to NVCT easement donors Paul and Betsy Martin, and Friends of Little Hunting Creek, for pulling off yet another spectacular event!
· 4/10 NVCT Second Saturdays Invasive Pull at Annandale Community Park
· 4/17 Prince William County Earth Day Celebration
· 4/17 NVCT Third Saturdays Invasive Pull on Hallman St., City of Fairfax
· 4/18 NVCT’s 10th Annual Earth Day Celebration and Silent Auction—thank you to everyone who attended; it was a wonderful evening!
· 4/24 Alexandria Earth Day Festival
· 4/27 Earth Force’s annual Youth Summit at Potomac Overlook Regional Park
· 5/1 Migratory bird walk at the Kust property—thank you to the Kusts for hosting yet another great event, and to Paula Sullivan for her expert birding skills!
· 5/1 Distributing Rain Barrels with Fairfax Master Naturalists
· 5/1 Restoration planting on NVCT land along Military Road—thanks again to Dave and Elizabeth Hayes for their very generous donation!
Most Successful Silent Auction Ever!

This was NVCT most successful Silent Auction ever!Thank you to all who attended the Tenth Annual Earth Day Silent Auction. It was a lovely event nestled away in the Fort C. F. Honors and Awards
We are proudto announce that NVCT and two of our easement donors were recipients of awards this spring, in recognition of their contributions to land conservation and environmental quality in Virginia.
· On April 8th, NVCT accepted the 2010 Governor’s Environmental Excellence Award in the Land Conservation Category at the 21st Annual Environment Virginia Symposium in Lexington, for our role in the protection of the majority of Crow’s Nest peninsula in Stafford County.
· On April 24th, Ms. Montie Kust was presented with the second annual Ellen Pickering Environmental Excellence Award by the City of Alexandria, in recognition for her life-long dedication to environmental stewardship, outreach and education. She has been a long-time supporter of NVCT, and donated a conservation easement on her nearly 3-acre Alexandria property in 2006. Since then, she and her daughter Kathleen have hosted many invasive removals and migratory bird-watching walks for the general public.
· That same weekend, Larry Valade accepted the 2010 Jackson M. Abbot Conservation Award on behalf of himself and his late wife, Thyra, from the Virginia Society of Ornithology for their generous donation of 20 acres to the University of Mary Washington, which they concurrently protected via easement with NVCT. Thyra loved the woods and birds, and worked tirelessly to protect them. She passed away soon after her dream was realized, but the woodland will always stand as her memorial, and NVCT is honored to be its caretaker. Continue reading
