Paul Siegel
Paul Siegel's connection with NVCT was deep and lasting. Paul was a former advisory council member, always challenging us to think bigger, aim higher, and have a greater impact in our work. His thoughtful questions, rooted in a deep understanding of ecology, environmental history, and policy, pushed our organization and others to hold decision-makers accountable and stand up for what’s right.
Paul and his beloved wife, Betsy Martin, were heavily involved with NVCT's work and mission. They were instrumental in placing parts of Little Hunting Creek under conservation easement, ensuring its protection for generations to come. Together, they co-founded and led the Friends of Little Hunting Creek — a shining example of how grassroots citizen environmental activism can genuinely make a difference in our communities. For over twenty years, Paul and Betsy steadfastly protected their Little Hunting Creek community in Fairfax County against development. His contributions — alongside Betsy and a dedicated group of volunteers — turned difficult work into lasting legacy: from countless trash cleanups and invasive plant pulls to restoring native habitat and improving trail access. Paul’s energy, determination, and insistence on doing the job right made everyone around him better.
Paul's efforts were widely recognized. As a certified Fairfax County Master Naturalist and recipient of the Fairfax County Environmental Excellence Award, Paul was celebrated for his unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship. Paul and Betsy were also the first-ever recipients of NVCT’s annual Peggy Stevens Award, exemplifying the heart of what it means to be stewards of the land. Yet beyond the honors, we remember Paul for his generosity of spirit, his curiosity, and his deep care for both people and the planet.
We will truly miss our friend and champion. The best way to honor Paul is to continue the work he cared so deeply about — to protect, restore, and love the places he fought for. NVCT is committed to that mission, and we thank Betsy from the bottom of our hearts for sharing so much of Paul — and his passion — with us.
The land, water, and people of Northern Virginia are better because of Paul Siegel. May we honor his legacy by continuing the good work, one step, one tree, one creek at a time.
