Conserved land recognized by String of Pearls Project

The Northern Virginia Conservation Trust and the Chesapeake Bay String of Pearls Project celebrated conservation landowners who have preserved their land forever in a recent ceremony held in Great Falls. (photos above were taken by Jay Fleming.)

Seven NVCT conserved properties–treasured private lands in our community–were named the newest Pearls. They are being added to the String of Pearls in the Chesapeake Bay watershed, 63 pearls and their landowners that have been honored to-date. The seven newest pearls are in Great Falls, McLean, and Oakton, and are the first conserved lands to be honored in Virginia.

The landowners honored at the event signed the Register of Pearls of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. The Register is on public view at the Circuit Courthouse in Annapolis, MD. Honorees each received a commendation from the Senate of Virginia, a personal letter of congratulations from Senator Tim Kaine, and a certificate from the Senate of Maryland. NVCT founder and current board member Richard Bliss was recognized with a print of a NASA photo of the Chesapeake Bay as seen from space.

Beautiful Plein Air paintings of the pearls by artists from the Washington society of Landscape Painters were created that morning and were on display.
