Alan Rowsome

Executive Director

Alan Rowsome has led the Northern Virginia Conservation Trust as its executive director since September 2017 with a focus on saving nearby nature in the urban and suburban enclaves of Northern Virginia. He oversees a dynamic and fast-growing organization that has protected nearly 150 natural areas, parks, and recreation sites throughout the region totaling over 8,000 acres. ​ Prior to 2017, Alan worked for The Wilderness Society (TWS) in Washington D.C. for 12 years as the leader of the organization’s government relations, advocacy, and conservation funding work.

At TWS, Alan was the national co-chair of the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) Coalition that successfully achieved permanent, dedicated funding of the LWCF at $900 million annually in 2020 after a nearly two-decade-long campaign that brought together businesses, land trusts, and conservation groups from across the country to support permanent and consistent funding for land preservation. A lifelong resident of the DC/MD/VA area, Rowsome holds a master’s degree in political management from The George Washington University and a bachelor’s degree from Miami University (OH) in U.S. History and Diplomacy and Foreign Affairs. He lives in Arlington with his wife, Kim, and their three sons.
