John Hopewell

John Hopewell joined the NVCT Board in 2015, and after his term ended, he joined the advisory council to stay involved with NVCT. He has more than 17 years of experience in using environmental science to shape public policy. He is also fascinated by weather and is an earth science specialist and writer with the Capital Weather Gang. Currently, John is an earth science teacher at Annandale High School!

Prior to obtaining his master’s degree from the University of Amsterdam, which concentrated on the environment and development, John worked as a researcher for the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and the Mount Washington Observatory. The focus of his research was to develop a snow gauge that could accurately measure snow in windy conditions, and thereby improve safety in the aviation industry.  

John was selected to join the Montana Conservation Corps after he graduated from Montana State University with a bachelor’s degree in physical geography. As part of his service, he improved and repaired nearly 50 miles of trails in Yellowstone National Park. 

John’s love of Northern Virginia and his passion for preserving its land for future generations run deep. Raised in Lake Barcroft in Fairfax County, John and his wife raised their daughter in the City of Falls Church and currently reside there.
